PROVIDENCE, R.I. — WaterFire has cancelled its full lighting scheduled for Saturday, September 26, because of the forecasted nor’easter.
The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Rhode Island this weekend. WaterFire organizers said the conditions could create unsafe circumstances for attendees, artists, vendors, volunteers and staff.
The September 26 event was originally planned as a full lighting celebrating Rhode Island educators.
WaterFire said the event will instead be held on Saturday, October 24. The rescheduled event will include the full lighting, vendors and onshore programming. Activities will begin at 5 p.m., with the fires scheduled to light at sunset.
Organizers said cancelling a lighting is not a decision they take lightly, but safety concerns led to the cancellation.
The cancellation comes as a nor’easter moves toward the region, with strong winds and widespread rain expected across Rhode Island this weekend.
