NARRAGANSETT, R.I. — Ferry service between Block Island and Point Judith has been cancelled Wednesday, September 23, due to rough sea conditions.
The Block Island Ferry announced that this applies to all high-speed and traditional ferry departures.
The cancellations come as a slow-moving ocean storm is expected to affect the region later this week. Ferry officials said wind and sea conditions are expected to increase Wednesday and Thursday before the storm moves into the area Friday and Saturday.
The company had initially planned to operate a limited traditional ferry schedule on Wednesday, with departures from Point Judith at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and departures from Block Island at 11:15 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Those trips were expected to operate on a trip-by-trip basis depending on sea conditions.
However, a service update posted Wednesday morning confirmed that the planned departures were cancelled.
Ferry officials said they are closely monitoring the National Weather Service marine forecast and expect the weather could lead to multiple days of service disruptions.
The company is continuing to monitor conditions from Wednesday through Sunday and said additional updates will be posted as more information becomes available.
Passengers traveling between Block Island and Point Judith should check the ferry’s website for the latest service information before making travel plans.
