CRANSTON, R.I. — After six long years, Budlong Pool finally reopens.

The new Budlong Aquatic Center is expected to open with a soft opening on Wednesday, July 8 at noon, pending final approval from the Rhode Island Department of Health.

The original Budlong Pool closed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and never reopened. As the aging facility was evaluated, the City of Cranston chose to build a brand-new aquatic center instead. The project faced several challenges, including redesigns, construction delays, and even an undocumented drain pipe that temporarily flooded the site.

When Budlong Pool opened in 1940, it was one of the largest municipal swimming pools in the United States. The original pool measured about 22,000 square feet and held nearly 1 million gallons of water. The new aquatic center is just under 8,000 square feet and holds approximately 180,000 gallons, making it about 64% smaller while offering modern amenities for today’s families.

The new facility features:
• Lap lanes
• Splash pad
• ADA-accessible pool entrance
• Renovated locker rooms and restrooms
• Shaded seating
• Picnic tables with umbrellas
• Cookout area
• Restored historic WPA-era pool house

The project was estimated at $4.75 million, funded through ARPA dollars and a federal grant. The aquatic center can accommodate approximately 400 swimmers, with room for another 150 visitors throughout the surrounding recreation area.

Daily Admission
• Ages 4 & under (with adult): Free
• Cranston Youth (5–17): $5
• Cranston Adults (18+): $8
• Non-Resident Youth: $10
• Non-Resident Adults: $15
• Seniors (55+) & Veterans: $5

Season Passes
• Individual: $60
• Family (same household): $120

After a six-year wait, one of Cranston’s most iconic summer destinations is ready to welcome families once again. A new generation will soon create memories at Budlong while longtime visitors experience a familiar tradition in a brand-new way.
