PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Happy 46th Birthday to one of Rhode Island’s most iconic and beloved landmarks, Nibbles Woodaway, better known as the Big Blue Bug!
For 46 years, Nibbles has been a familiar sight along I-95 in Providence, welcoming generations of Rhode Islanders and visitors traveling through the Ocean State. What started as a larger-than-life mascot for Big Blue Bug Solutions grew into something much bigger — a quirky Rhode Island icon and one of the state’s most recognizable roadside landmarks.
Over the decades, Nibbles has become part of Rhode Island culture. Millions of drivers have passed by the giant blue termite, and for many Rhode Islanders, spotting Nibbles from the highway is a familiar sign that you’re home — or at least getting close.
Nibbles has also become known for getting into the spirit of holidays and special occasions, transforming throughout the years with festive decorations that have made the landmark even more memorable. Whether dressed up for the holidays or simply standing high above the highway in his signature blue, Nibbles has remained a constant presence as the city and state around him have changed.
Today, the Big Blue Bug is more than just an advertising mascot. He’s a piece of Rhode Island nostalgia, a roadside celebrity, and a landmark that has been making people smile for nearly half a century.
