PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence police are investigating a deadly shooting after a 20-year-old man was found suffering from a gunshot wound early Monday morning on Swift Street near Silver Spring Street.
Officers were called to the area around 2:30 a.m. for reports of a “man down.” When police arrived, they located the victim with a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators believe the shooting may have been targeted as detectives continue working to piece together what led up to the violence and identify whoever was responsible.
The scene remained active for hours overnight as Providence Police detectives and the department’s Crime Scene Unit canvassed the area for evidence.
No arrests have been announced and police have not released information on any possible suspects at this time.
This marks the second homicide of the year in Providence. The first occurred in January, when 51-year-old Romy Alfonso was allegedly attacked by multiple juveniles. Witnesses told police the group knocked Alfonso to the ground and repeatedly assaulted him before he was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Residents in the neighborhood say they are looking for answers as the investigation continues to unfold.
