PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island may be known for its coastline, restaurants and small-town charm, but a 2026 national ranking puts two of the Ocean State’s largest cities near the bottom of the list for places to retire.
WalletHub compared 182 U.S. cities based on several factors, including affordability, activities, quality of life and health care.
Providence ranked No. 142 overall, while Warwick ranked No. 163.
Affordability Hurts Rhode Island Cities

Warwick’s strongest category was health care, where it ranked No. 62 nationally.
Providence and Warwick Rank Near Bottom for Weather
Weather was another major factor in the rankings.
Providence and Warwick tied at No. 178 for mild weather, placing both Rhode Island cities near the bottom nationally in that category.
The rankings highlight some of the challenges facing Rhode Island as a retirement destination, particularly when it comes to housing and living costs and seasonal weather.
At the same time, Rhode Island offers retirees access to beaches, restaurants, health care services and relatively short travel distances between communities.
Whether those advantages outweigh the state’s affordability and weather challenges will depend on what individual retirees value most.
