Mosquito in Cranston tests positive for West Nile virus

CRANSTON, R.I. — State health and environmental officials have confirmed that West Nile virus has been detected in a mosquito sample collected in Cranston, marking Rhode Island’s second positive mosquito sample for the virus this year.

The mosquitoes were collected on July 14 and later tested by the Rhode Island State Health Laboratories. Officials said no other mosquito samples collected across the state have tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV), or additional West Nile virus at this time.

Rhode Island remains at a medium risk level for West Nile virus statewide.

West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in the United States. Most people who become infected do not develop symptoms, but about 1 in 5 may experience fever, headaches, body aches, fatigue, or other flu-like symptoms. In rare cases, the virus can lead to more serious illness.

Health officials recommend reducing your risk by using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, eliminating standing water around your home, and avoiding mosquito activity during dawn and dusk whenever possible.
