PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island Senate has approved legislation that would allow bar and restaurant hours across the state to be extended during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The proposal would give cities and towns the option to permit extended indoor liquor service hours between June 11 and July 3, aligning with the international soccer tournament that is expected to draw massive crowds and tourism activity across the region.
Participating establishments could stay open until 4 a.m., with alcohol service permitted as late as 3 a.m. Businesses seeking extended hours would also need to submit an application at least two weeks in advance.
Local approval still required
Under the legislation, municipalities would still need to authorize the extended hours locally before businesses could participate.
Businesses and tourism groups support proposal
Backers of the bill argue the temporary changes could boost revenue for bars, restaurants, and hospitality businesses during one of the largest sporting events in the world.
Opponents have raised concerns about public safety, noise, and late-night enforcement issues tied to longer alcohol service hours.
The proposal now moves to the House, which previously approved similar legislation sponsored by Rep. Joshua Giraldo. Lawmakers in both chambers must now negotiate a final agreement before the legislation can be sent to Governor McKee for consideration.
