MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — A large disturbance at Second Beach in Middletown led to multiple arrests and a major police response after hundreds of teenagers reportedly gathered for what authorities described as a “senior skip day” event.

Police estimated that about 1,200 high school-aged individuals gathered at the beach and nearby parking areas. Officers said they first received reports around 12:45 p.m. about the growing crowd. Police remained on scene as more people continued arriving.

Investigators said the situation escalated after officers accused one individual of disorderly behavior and took him into custody. Authorities said tensions quickly increased when another person allegedly assaulted officers, causing the crowd to become more aggressive.

Police said some people refused orders to leave as officers worked to restore order and clear the area. Authorities eventually used pepper spray to disperse the crowd while additional law enforcement agencies responded to assist.

Officers from Middletown and Newport police departments were among the agencies that responded. Authorities said nine people were arrested and are facing various charges.

Among those arrested was 18-year-old Ronan Pinkham of Medway, Massachusetts. Police allege Pinkham struck a Newport officer with a vehicle while trying to leave the area. Investigators said he later admitted to driving under the influence and now faces charges including felony assault and DUI. The injured officer was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police said those arrested included both adults and juveniles from Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The disturbance happened during an unusually warm spring day that drew large crowds to Rhode Island beaches. It also came on the same day another major beach-related disturbance was reported in Narragansett.
