PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island pet owners will have another option for accessing veterinary care under a new law signed by Gov. Dan McKee.
The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Jon D. Brien (2026-H 7020) and Sen. Brian J. Thompson (2026-S 3180), establishes a framework for veterinary telemedicine in Rhode Island.

The law allows Rhode Island-licensed veterinarians to establish a veterinarian-client-patient relationship electronically, subject to certain requirements. Veterinarians must make a good-faith determination about whether a pet can be treated through telemedicine or requires an in-person visit.
Veterinarians must also obtain the client’s consent and maintain related documentation for at least one year. Telemedicine providers must publicly display their services and standard charges on their websites.
Brien said the law could improve access to veterinary care amid a statewide shortage of veterinary professionals.
Thompson said telemedicine could also provide an alternative to time-consuming veterinary visits and expensive emergency animal hospital trips, particularly on nights and weekends.
McKee signed the legislation during a ceremony outside the State House attended by the bill sponsors, animal advocates, officials and several pets.
