NEWPORT, R.I. — Castle Hill Inn reopens its restaurants and bars Friday, marking another major step in the Newport landmark’s recovery following a fire that damaged parts of the historic property earlier this year.
The reopening comes ahead of Memorial Day weekend and includes the return of dining at The Lawn Terrace, Aurelia at Castle Hill and outdoor gathering spaces overlooking Narragansett Bay. Dining reservations became available earlier this month.
Castle Hill had already resumed overnight stays in March, reopening its Beach Houses and Beach Cottages while restoration work continued on the main mansion building. During that initial phase, the Chalet served as the center of operations for guests.
The reopening marks another milestone after a fire broke out on February 5 at the Ocean Drive property. Investigators later determined the fire was accidental and related to a wood-burning fireplace. All guests and employees were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.
While restaurants and other areas are returning, all guest rooms inside the historic Agassiz Mansion, except The Rose Room, will remain unavailable through the rest of 2026 as restoration efforts continue.
Castle Hill Inn sits on a 40-acre property overlooking Narragansett Bay and has long been one of Newport’s most recognizable destinations. The property dates back to the late 1800s, when it was originally built as a private summer residence during Newport’s Gilded Age era. Over time, the estate evolved from a seasonal retreat into the waterfront inn known today, featuring its historic main mansion along with cottages and guest accommodations spread across the property.
